The culture industry whether it is the radio, film or television produces forms of reality that socially direct and orient viewer’s emotions. With the evolution of modern behaviours, values and beliefs, current films directed towards children have reflected changing norms by focusing on the empowerment of both boys and girls. The following will demonstrate the impact of social order on individual emotions through diverse events in a lifetime. More specifically, individuals may face conflicting emotional situations where actual feelings do not match with what society has deemed the ideal feeling (Davis, 2012). In turn, these emotional dilemmas most often lead to feelings of shame, anger, sadness and questions of self- esteem. The exemplary analysis of the film Brave (2012) directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman will illuminate the highs and lows within the relationship of dealing with one’s emotions. Further, the film demonstrates the rules and scripts of feeling pr edetermined by society, on they ways of behaving, acting and displaying emotion (Hochschild, 1983). In addition, the protagonist experiences emotional deviances, which spark resistance and refusal of reality. Finally, the film will aid in exploring the process of shame and anger within an emotional dilemma that is all too relevant in modern society.
